Creating A Buzz - Arts Award Case Study

In April 2014, 10 students from our Creating A Buzz drama group based at George Mitchell School in Leyton, started work on Arts Award Bronze.  They met once a week after school during term time with drama workshop leader Selina Jeremiah at George Mitchell Secondary School to explore drama and dance techniques and devise a play - The Firebird.  They also visited the William Morris Gallery to work with artist Anna Alcock to create a hugh firebird backdrop for the play.  The play was then performed at Arcola Theatre in July 2014 as part of a double bill with Arcola Youth Theatre.  The group also performed World War 1- inspired poetry at an Arts Award evening on Remembrance Day at South Chingford Community Library in November 2014.

Throughout the period, the participants were given opportunities to lead puppetry sessions with students at George Mitchell Primary School at after school sessions in the summer and autumn terms of 2014.  In early 2015, sessions focussed on working on Arts Award portfolios and their moderation took place in March 2015 with all 10 participants achieving their Bronze certificates.

Feedback from the students included:

"I participated in weekly lessons with Selina...I enjoyed working with the story the firebird.  It was mystical and enjoyable."

"I had to practise and work on my phobia of public speaking for the performance."

"I wanted to improve as watching others dance exceptionally inspired me greatly."

"The contact printing was simple and easy to understand as well as an enjoyable activity to participate in."
